The Child Health Obesity Problem
Child obesity is a problem for literally millions of kids and their
parents across the world. Perhaps you are being proactive and
researching the child health obesity problem, or perhaps you are in
search of resources to help your overweight child.
Every day you can find articles and studies that lay out the problem of
child obesity and the effects on both children and society. Rarely,
though, can you actually find help. Real help, by real people who care
about the problem. I came across one of these people recently, and I'd
like to tell you his story.
Dr. Michael Scaccia is a board-certified pediatrician in Chesapeake,
Virginia. Like many of us, Dr. Scaccia was frustrated by the lack of
practical and safe information out there for overweight kids. Day after
day he saw kids whose weight destroyed their self- esteem. Parents
didn't know what to do first, and grew hopeless that they would ever
find anything that would really help their child.
Dr. Scaccia took matters into his own hands, and created some handouts.
He started small, with tips on reading labels and understanding what
calories were. Over time, he expanded his handouts and added information
on fitness and exercise. While parents found the information helpful,
Dr. Scaccia knew that there was still something missing. Something that
would really make a difference in these families' lives.
What was missing was the emotional side of childhood obesity. He
realized that the key to overcoming this devastating problem was by
helping children develop self-confidence and self-discipline. Showing
children that a healthy state of mind and a whole-body approach was the
only way to ensure lasting success.
Dr. Scaccia went on to put everything together into a book, aptly called
"The
Ultimate Parent Guide to Fitness and Nutrition", which I recently
had the pleasure to read myself. In this 280+ page easy to read e-book,
he walks parents by the hand through the nature of the child obesity
problem, then jumps right into giving simple, practical advice that
parents can put to work right away. These are great tips if you are
concerned about childhood obesity prevention, or if someone in your
family is already overweight and you are looking for help.
Dr. Scaccia's philosophy is very straightforward: make small changes
gradually until they become habits. It's refreshing to hear someone not
advocating that people turn their lives upside down for a change. The
book covers all three aspects of good weight management: nutritional,
physical, and emotional. Also included are numerous healthy recipes your
family will enjoy. Dr. Scaccia's conversational, non-judgemental style
treats the parent reading the book with dignity and respect.
"The Ultimate Parent Guide to Fitness and Nutrition" is a breath of
fresh air on the very popular topic of childhood obesity. I found it
helpful and hopeful, and I know that there are a lot of families out
there who can benefit from reading it.
