Icy Cool Snack Receipes

With temperatures skyrocketing into the 3 digits across the country, it’s time to cool down. There is nothing better than some icy cool snacks when it’s hot outside. If you are ready for a healthy cool treat without too much fat, sugar and calories, give a few of these ideas a try.

Iced Coffee
Sometimes we just need that little caffeine pick-me-up during the day, but who wants to drink hot coffee when it’s hot outside. If you are a fan of iced coffee drinks, why not whip up one of your own. You are able to control the total calories by making it yourself. If you like flavored iced coffee, simply start by brewing a flavored coffee or opt for low-sugar flavoring syrup. Allow the coffee to cool down to room temperature, and then chill it even further in the fridge. Add the coffee and some ice cubes in your blender. Add some stevia to sweeten and some skim or soymilk. Blend and serve.

Frozen Fruit Juice Popsicle
For a yummy frozen treat for you and the kids, make some juice popsicles. You can buy plastic Popsicle molds, or just use an ice tray and some Popsicle sticks that you cut in half. Pour any fruit juice into either the Popsicle mold or the ice tray. Allow it to get halfway frozen before you stick in the Popsicle sticks to make sure they stay upright. When they are frozen solid, briefly dip the mold in hot water and your Popsicles will pop right out.

These work great with just about any type of juice. For an even healthier treat, add some fruit puree to the mix before freezing. Combine different fruits and juices for an interesting blend. Start by freezing a layer of pureed strawberries and juice, then top with orange juice and finish freezing. Get creative and you’ll come up with all sorts of fun frozen combinations.

Sorbets and Frozen Yogurt
Fruits sorbets and frozen yogurts are often a much healthier alternative to regular ice cream. Read the label though, some of them are just as high in calories and fat as regular ice cream. If you have an ice cream freezer, you can also make your own. That will give you a lot more control about what ingredients you use. You can find plenty of free recipes for making both sorbets and frozen yogurt yourself. Start with ripe fresh fruit for the sorbets and a good low-fat yogurt for your frozen yogurt treats. Serve either one with some fresh fruit for an even healthier treat.

Freeze Your Fruit
For an even easier and fast frozen treat, freeze any type of berry or grapes. Choose very ripe fruit for this to make sure they are sweet enough. It’s actually a great way to store ripe fruit that you can’t use right away, since freezing will stop it from ripening any more and going bad. You can also use this frozen fruit to add to smoothies. Add some milk and vanilla yogurt for a healthy alternative to a milk shake.

Go ahead; whip up some delicious frozen treats for you and your friends and family. It’s a fun and tasty way to cool off.
